Save Money: Reface Cabinets Instead of Replacing

Is it time for a new look in your kitchen? Perhaps you're ready to modernize or just put your own special touches on the kitchen in your newly purchased home. Whatever the reason for remodeling your kitchen, you are probably looking for ways to save money while still bringing your kitchen up to your standards and expectations.

One way to save money is to reface kitchen cabinets rather than completely replace them. Cabinets that are well designed to begin with are structurally sound enough to reface them easily.

By refacing your cabinets, you can save as much as 50% of the amount of replacement cabinets, and they will look completely new. The project will also be far less invasive and take a lot less time to complete than if you replace the entire cabinets. Along with refacing your cabinets, you then often have the option of coordinating a matching counter top.

Cost savings associated with refacing comes from lower labor and material costs. Typically, the refacing of your cabinets will consist of the simple removal of your old cabinet doors and drawer fronts. New custom doors and drawer fronts will then be installed. As a bonus, you can generally specify more cabinets to be installed if you have the room and need additional cabinet space.

By refacing your cabinets, you can completely change their look by selecting a different style or design for the doors and drawers. Your current cabinets may be non-wood composites, but you can reface them to look like fine wood cabinets in no time, and for substantially less then real solid hardwood.

Refacing rather than replacing your cabinets may be the right choice for you in many circumstances. If your cabinets need an update but are not in need of total repair, you should have them refaced. When remodeling your kitchen, if you are able to select new appliances that fit within your current cabinets, you will not need to replace the cabinets, but can instead reface them. Refacing also helps to add to the resale value of your house without the expense of a tear-down remodel associated with new cabinets.
